Looker Studio Reporting on GA4 for Marketers
Build GA4 dashboards in Looker Studio that stay within API quotas: owner credentials, fewer charts, extracts and BigQuery as a source.
Looker Studio is the free way to put GA4 numbers in front of people who will never open GA4, but GA4 API quotas limit busy reports. Use owner's credentials, one shared data source, fewer charts and, for heavy reports, extracts or BigQuery. Google's documentation now also calls the product Data Studio.
- You need at least Read & Analyze access to the GA4 property to connect.
- Reports using the GA4 connector draw on GA4 Data API quota tokens; check usage by right-clicking a chart.
- Owner's credentials let viewers share cached data and use fewer tokens.
- Looker Studio matches GA4 reports, not explorations; segments and comparisons aren't available in the connector.
- For large or many-viewer dashboards, connect to BigQuery (lesson 17) instead.

02Staying under quota
Google's troubleshooting guide suggests these steps, which also make reports faster:
- Switch the data source to owner's credentials.
- Use one reusable GA4 data source instead of duplicates.
- Reduce the number of charts and pages.
- Extract the data to a static snapshot for heavy reports.
- Connect to the BigQuery export instead of the GA4 API.
Our view: if a chart can't be explained in one sentence in the meeting, remove it. Dashboards fail from clutter more than from bad data.
