Track Gemini visibility with a monthly routine
A monthly Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews visibility routine: prompt set, manual sampling, API logging, Search Console, GA4 and actions.
Visibility in Google's AI comes from three surfaces that behave differently. The Gemini app, AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models, show different links and change week to week. No single tool sees all of them, and Google warns against third-party tools that claim to use "internal" Google metrics. What works is a fixed monthly routine. Run a stable prompt set by hand on each surface, log grounded answers through the Gemini API for scale, pull Search Console's Generative AI impressions and GA4's AI Assistant sessions, then turn the gaps into a short action list. This lesson gives you that routine, a scoring sheet and a one-page report, benchmarked against Competitors A-D.
- Use a fixed set of 25-40 buyer prompts, grouped by funnel stage, and keep it stable for at least a quarter.
- Sample three surfaces by hand each month (Gemini app, AI Mode, Google Search for AI Overviews), from a clean profile and a fixed location.
- Add a Gemini API run with Grounding with Google Search for repeatable logs of cited URLs. It's a proxy, not the consumer product.
- Combine the measured data, Search Console Generative AI impressions and GA4 AI Assistant sessions, with your prompt scores. Report them separately.
- End every month with no more than five actions, each with an owner.
Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Gemini Apps Help, the Gemini release notes, Google Workspace Help, Google Search Central, Search Console Help, the Gemini API docs and the Google blog posts cited in Sources. 01What goes in the prompt set?
| Stage | Share of prompts | Example (Ledgerline) |
|---|---|---|
| Category discovery | 30% | "best AP automation software for mid-sized companies" |
| Use case and integration | 25% | "AP automation for NetSuite users" |
| Comparison | 20% | "Ledgerline vs Competitor A" |
| Pricing and evaluation | 15% | "how much does AP automation cost per invoice" |
| Brand facts | 10% | "what is Ledgerline" |
Keep prompts in natural language, as buyers type them. See Building a prompt set and Building your first prompt set.
02How do you sample each surface?
| Surface | How to sample | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app | Signed-in test account with no connected apps or memory, fixed model choice, new chat per prompt | Mentioned? Position, description accuracy, sources cited |
| AI Mode | Signed-out or test profile, fixed country, new session | Mentioned? Inline link? Which domains linked? |
| AI Overviews | Normal Google search, same profile | Did an AIO show? Were we linked? |
| Gemini API (grounded) | Script with the google_search tool, 3 runs per prompt | Mentioned, cited URLs (url_citation), search queries used |
The grounded API response lists the search queries the model ran (the google_search_call step) and each cited URL (url_citation annotations), which is a useful view of fan-out. Grounding on Gemini 3 and later models includes 5,000 free search queries a month, then $14 per 1,000 queries. One prompt can trigger several queries, so estimate before you schedule runs. A minimal logging call:
curl -X POST "https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta/interactions" \
-H "x-goog-api-key: $GEMINI_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Api-Revision: 2026-05-20" \
-d '{"model":"gemini-3.8-flash",
"input":"best AP automation software for mid-sized companies",
"tools":[{"type":"google_search"}]}'03How do you score answers?
| Field | Values |
|---|---|
| mentioned | 0/1 |
| position | 1 = first named, 2 = in top three, 3 = later |
| linked | 0/1 (your domain among links or grounding URLs) |
| accuracy | correct / minor error / wrong |
| sentiment | positive / neutral / negative |
| competitors_named | A, B, C, D |
| top_cited_domains | text |
Metrics per surface:
- Mention rate = prompts mentioned / prompts run.
- Link rate = prompts linked / prompts run.
- Share of voice = your mentions / all mentions of you and Competitors A-D.
- Accuracy rate = correct descriptions / mentions.
Run API prompts three times and treat a mention as stable at two or more of three runs. See Statistical confidence in AI visibility tracking.
04What's the monthly calendar?
| Week | Task | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manual sampling on three surfaces; API run | 3-4 hours |
| 1 | Pull Search Console Generative AI export and GA4 AI Assistant data | 1 hour |
| 2 | Score, update league table, compare with last month | 2 hours |
| 2 | Write a one-page report and up to five actions | 1 hour |
| 3-4 | Ship actions (content, profiles, feed, markup) | Varies |
| Quarterly | Review the prompt set, retire stale prompts, add new ones | 2 hours |
05What goes in the one-page report?
| Section | Content |
|---|---|
| Headline | One sentence: what changed and why it matters |
| Measured | Search Console Generative AI impressions (trend), GA4 AI Assistant sessions and key events, Gemini source |
| Sampled | Mention, link, share of voice and accuracy by surface, vs last month and vs Competitors A-D |
| Estimated | Possible Gemini app traffic in Direct (range, labelled) |
| Cited domains | Top 10 league table |
| Changes | Google announcements, site changes, control settings |
| Actions | Up to five, with owner and due date |
Our view: label each number as measured, sampled or estimated. Leadership trusts the report more when the uncertainty is visible, and it stops month-to-month noise in sampled data from being read as a trend.

Walkthrough
- The SEO lead ran 32 prompts on each surface and 96 API runs (32 x 3). She estimated grounding queries in advance to stay within the free monthly allowance.
- The league table showed a review site and Competitor A's integration hub as the most-cited domains.
- Accuracy problems in the Gemini app traced back to an outdated pricing description on a review site.
- Search Console showed Generative AI impressions up 18% and GA4 showed 410 Gemini sessions, both reported as measured.
- Five actions went to owners: update the review-site profile, publish two integration pages, refresh the benchmark, fix product markup, and pitch one cited publisher.
07Common mistakes
- Changing the prompt set every month.
- Treating API results as the consumer app.
- One run per prompt.
- Reporting only your own mention rate.
- Long action lists that nobody finishes.
08Try it yourself
Write 25 prompts across the five stages. Run ten of them today in the Gemini app, AI Mode and Google Search, and score them with the fields above. Note the three most-cited domains you don't own.
09Quick quiz
1. Why run API prompts three times?
Answer: Answers vary, so a repeated mention is more reliable than a single run.
2. What does a grounded API response give you?
Answer: The search queries the model ran and the URLs it cited.
3. How should report numbers be labelled?
Answer: As measured, sampled or estimated.
10What should you check before the next lesson?
- The prompt set is locked for the quarter.
- The scoring sheet and league table are set up.
- The first one-page report has five owned actions.
