Pick the right LinkedIn Ads objective and format: the new hierarchy, the eight objectives, Sponsored Content, video, document, CTV and message ads.

Short answer

Choose the LinkedIn Ads objective that matches the action you will actually measure, then pick the format that best shows your message. Campaign Manager now uses Campaign, Ad set and Ad (renamed from October 2025). The eight objectives sit in three funnel tiers: brand awareness; website visits, engagement and video views; and lead generation, website conversions, job applicants and talent leads. Single image, document and video ads are the B2B workhorses, Thought Leader Ads add a human voice, Lead Gen Forms cut friction, and CTV and message ads are specialist tools with limits.

Key takeaways
  • The hierarchy is Ad account, Campaign, Ad set, Ad (renamed from October 2025, rolling out gradually).
  • Eight objectives across awareness, consideration and conversions; the objective controls formats, bidding and optimisation goals.
  • Optimise lead generation for qualified leads only when you send lead quality data back through the Conversions API.
  • Sponsored Messaging in the EEA and Switzerland only reaches members who opted in.
  • LinkedIn Help still documents Accelerate as an AI-powered campaign type. A secondary report of an August 2026 retirement is not confirmed. Check Campaign Manager.

Checked 8 November 2026 against LinkedIn Marketing Solutions Help on campaign hierarchy changes, marketing objectives, the lead generation objective, Thought Leader Ads, CTV Ads, Creator Marketplace, Sponsored Messaging in the EEA, and the current Accelerate help pages, cited in Sources. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.

01How is a LinkedIn Ads account structured?

Level (from Oct 2025)FormerlyWhat you set
Ad accountAd accountBilling, currency, Page link, users
CampaignCampaign groupOverall budget, schedule, optional objective and Dynamic Group Budget
Ad setCampaignObjective, audience, format, placement, budget, bidding
AdAd (Creative)Copy, image or video, CTA, URL

The rename is rolling out gradually, so some accounts still show the old terms. Dynamic URL tracking parameters were renamed too: campaign-group parameters became CAMPAIGN_ID and CAMPAIGN_NAME, campaign parameters became AD_SET_ID and AD_SET_NAME, and CREATIVE_ID and CREATIVE_NAME became AD_ID and AD_NAME. Existing ad sets update automatically; new or edited ad sets must use the new parameters.

02Which objective should you pick?

Funnel tierObjectiveRecommended optimisation goal (LinkedIn Help)Use when
AwarenessBrand awarenessReachYou want target accounts to recognise you
ConsiderationWebsite visitsLanding page clicksYou want people to read content on your site
ConsiderationEngagementEngagement clicksYou want follows, comments, clicks on content
ConsiderationVideo viewsVideo viewsYou want video watched
ConversionsLead generationQualified leads (needs CAPI data) or leadsYou want leads via Lead Gen Forms
ConversionsWebsite conversionsWebsite conversionsYou want sign-ups, demos or purchases on your site
ConversionsJob applicantsLanding page clicksRecruiting

Our view: most B2B accounts need only three: brand awareness or video views for cold target accounts, engagement or website visits for content, and lead generation or website conversions for demand capture.

03Which ad formats exist?

LinkedIn Audience Network can extend single image, carousel, document and video ads to partner apps and sites. Check placements and exclusions in each ad set.

04What happened to Accelerate?

LinkedIn Help still documents Accelerate as an AI-powered campaign type you can create for supported objectives and formats, including single image, video and document. A secondary article reported that Accelerate was retired on 4 August 2026 and that existing campaigns could not be extended from 5 January 2027. Those dates are not on the live Help pages we checked on 8 November 2026, which still explain how to create an Accelerate campaign. Check Campaign Manager before you plan around a retirement. Review any AI-drafted copy before it spends; generic ad copy wastes expensive impressions.

05How do you build a first campaign?

  1. Create a Campaign named by quarter and goal, for example "2026Q4 – Pipeline – Finance".
  2. Create an Ad set and choose the objective.
  3. Audience: location, then company list or job criteria (lesson 13). Decide on audience expansion and the Audience Network.
  4. Format: pick one format per ad set so results are comparable.
  5. Budget, schedule and bidding: lesson 16.
  6. Conversion tracking: select conversions from the Insight Tag or CAPI (lesson 17).
  7. Ads: two to four ads per ad set with distinct angles.
  8. URL tracking: add UTM parameters with dynamic values (lesson 18).
  9. Review and launch.

06How do you match creative to the objective?

ObjectiveCreative angleCTA
Brand awarenessPoint of view, founder video, customer logo storyNone or "Learn more"
EngagementUseful document, poll result, opinion"Learn more", follow
Website visitsArticle or tool teaser"Learn more", "Read"
Lead generationSpecific asset or offer"Download", "Register", "Request demo"
Website conversionsTrial, demo, pricing"Sign up", "Request demo"

07Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Competitors A to D and all figures are illustrative.

Ledgerline ran one ad set on website conversions to a broad "finance" audience with a single image. Cost per demo was high. Competitor A uses Thought Leader Ads and document ads.

Walkthrough

  1. Campaign: "2026Q4 – Finance pipeline" with three ad sets.
  2. Cold: brand awareness, Thought Leader Ads from the founder, Tier 1 and 2 company list.
  3. Warm: lead generation, document ad (month-end checklist) with a Lead Gen Form, retargeting video viewers and Page visitors.
  4. Hot: website conversions, single image "See Ledgerline in 20 minutes" to Lead Gen Form openers and site visitors.
  5. Results after 8 weeks (illustrative): cost per qualified lead down 38%, and demo requests up from 14 to 31.

08Common mistakes

  • Choosing website conversions for cold audiences with no conversion volume.
  • Mixing formats in one ad set, then not knowing what worked.
  • Using old dynamic parameters such as CREATIVE_ID in new ad sets.
  • Expecting message ads to scale in the EEA.
  • Leaving the Audience Network on without checking placements.

09Try it yourself

Sketch a three-ad-set campaign (cold, warm, hot) for your product. For each ad set, write the objective, audience, format, one ad angle and the conversion you will track.

10Quick quiz

1. What is a "Campaign" called in the old hierarchy? Answer: Campaign group.

2. Which objective needs a LinkedIn Recruiter contract? Answer: Talent leads.

3. What does the qualified leads optimisation goal need? Answer: Qualified lead data shared through the Conversions API.

4. Where can CTV ads target? Answer: The US and Canada, English-language audiences only.

11What should you check before the next lesson?

  • Your account's hierarchy terms and URL parameters updated.
  • One objective per ad set with a measurable action.
  • A cold, warm and hot structure sketched.
