Short answer

LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms open inside LinkedIn and are pre-filled from the member's profile, so people convert without leaving the feed. To keep quality high: ask one or two qualifying questions, add hidden fields (up to 20) so every lead carries its campaign, ad set and ad, sync leads to your CRM instead of downloading CSVs, and send qualified-lead data back through the Conversions API so LinkedIn can optimise for qualified leads. Follow up within hours. Member profile data from forms can only be stored in Campaign Manager for one year.

Key takeaways
  • Lead Gen Forms work with single image, carousel, video, event, document, message and conversation ads.
  • Keep forms short: about three to five pre-filled fields plus one or two qualifying questions (our view).
  • Hidden fields: up to 20, static or dynamic (ACCOUNT, CAMPAIGN, AD_SET, AD names and IDs).
  • Qualified leads optimisation needs Conversions API data and uses maximum delivery only.
  • Lead profile data is retained for one year; sync to your CRM.

01How do Lead Gen Forms work?

A member clicks your ad's CTA, a form opens with profile fields such as name, email, company and job title pre-filled, they add any custom answers and submit. You get the lead in Campaign Manager, your CRM or both.

SettingOptions (LinkedIn Help)
Ad formatsSingle image, carousel, video, event, document, message, conversation
BiddingMaximum delivery, cost cap, manual
Optimisation goalsQualified leads, leads, clicks, impressions
Qualified leads goalSingle image, carousel, video, event, document; maximum delivery only
Message ad formatsLeads optimisation only

Newsletter articles are not currently available for lead generation ad sets.

02How should you design the form?

  1. Offer headline: say exactly what they get ("Month-end close checklist, 12 pages").
  2. Details: one or two sentences on value.
  3. Privacy policy URL: required. Add custom consent checkboxes where your legal basis requires them (see email compliance: GDPR and CAN-SPAM).
  4. Fields: first name, last name, work email, company, job title. Add company size or country only if you route by them.
  5. Qualifying questions: one or two multiple-choice questions, such as "Which AP tool do you use today?" or "When are you planning to change?".
  6. Hidden fields: see below.
  7. Thank-you screen: link to the asset and a next step, such as booking a demo.
Field countTypical effect (practitioner claim)
3–4Highest volume, lowest qualification
5–6Balanced
7+Lower volume, better qualified

03What are hidden fields and how do you use them?

Hidden fields add columns to your Leads report that members never see. You can add up to 20 per form, each with a field name up to 250 characters.

TypeExampleWhy
Staticlead_source = linkedinRouting in CRM
Staticoffer = month-end-checklistAsset tracking
DynamicCAMPAIGN_NAMECampaign reporting without new forms
DynamicAD_SET_NAMEAudience reporting
DynamicAD_NAMECreative reporting

Hidden fields can only be added when creating a form or editing a saved form, not on a form attached to an active ad set. Some CRM partners do not support hidden fields, profile link fields or custom checkboxes; check yours.

04How do you get leads into your CRM?

  1. Native integrations: LinkedIn integrates with major CRMs and marketing automation platforms (for example HubSpot and Salesforce) through partners listed in the LinkedIn Marketing Partner Directory.
  2. Automation tools: an iPaaS or n8n workflow can push leads into your CRM (see n8n CRM and HubSpot workflows).
  3. CSV download: Content & assets > Lead generation forms > select form > date range > Download leads. Needs viewer access on the ad account and Lead Gen Forms manager on the Page.
  4. Test: submit a test lead and confirm it lands with hidden fields intact. If you edit a form in draft, update field mappings in the CRM too.

05How do you optimise for qualified leads?

The qualified leads goal uses lead quality data you send back to LinkedIn through the Conversions API (direct, through a partner, or manual upload). Steps:

  1. Set up the Conversions API (lesson 17).
  2. Define "qualified" in your CRM, such as SQL or meeting booked.
  3. Send that stage back as a conversion.
  4. Create lead generation ad sets; with CAPI connected, qualified leads is selected by default with maximum delivery.

06How fast should you follow up?

Our view: within one working hour for demo requests and within one working day for content downloads. Lead Gen Form leads did not visit your site, so the first email must remind them what they asked for. Use an email sequence (see B2B email newsletter strategy for nurture ideas) and give sales the ad and question answers.

07Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Competitors A to D and all figures are illustrative.

Ledgerline's form had nine fields, no hidden fields and leads downloaded weekly by CSV.

Walkthrough

  1. Form: five pre-filled fields plus "Invoices per month" and "Current AP tool".
  2. Hidden fields: lead_source, offer, CAMPAIGN_NAME, AD_SET_NAME, AD_NAME.
  3. Sync: HubSpot integration, test lead verified.
  4. Routing: more than 1,000 invoices a month goes to sales the same day.
  5. CAPI: SQL stage sent back; ad set switched to qualified leads.
  6. Result after 8 weeks (illustrative): form completion rate up from 9% to 14%; qualified rate up from 18% to 31%; cost per qualified lead down 35%.

08Common mistakes

  • Long forms that copy your website form.
  • Weekly CSV downloads and slow follow-up.
  • No hidden fields, so you cannot tell which ad produced the lead.
  • Missing consent checkboxes where needed.
  • Judging by cost per lead only.

09Try it yourself

Rebuild one form: five fields, two qualifying questions, three dynamic hidden fields and a thank-you screen with a next step. Submit a test lead and confirm it lands in your CRM.
