LinkedIn Insight Tag and Conversions API via GTM: Setup Guide
Install the LinkedIn Insight Tag and Conversions API with Google Tag Manager: partner ID, conversions, Stape server-side, deduplication and consent.
Install the LinkedIn Insight Tag through Google Tag Manager with the official LinkedIn InsightTag 2.0 community template and your partner ID, firing on all pages after consent. Add event-specific conversions for forms and sign-ups. Then add the Conversions API so server-side events survive browser limits: Campaign Manager can connect to GTM directly and set up a server container through Stape. Send the same event ID from browser and server so LinkedIn counts each conversion once. That data powers website audiences, conversion reporting and qualified-lead optimisation.
- Partner ID: Campaign Manager > Measure > Signals manager > Insight Tag > "I will use a tag manager".
- GTM: Community Template Gallery > LinkedIn InsightTag 2.0 > Partner ID > All Pages trigger.
- Event-specific conversions use a conversion ID in the same template, fired on the action's trigger.
- CAPI via GTM needs a web container sending GA4 events and a server container; LinkedIn's embedded Stape flow can host one for free for eligible accounts.
- Deduplicate with a shared event ID; LinkedIn keeps the Insight Tag event.
Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against LinkedIn Marketing Solutions Help on adding the Insight Tag to GTM, partner IDs, event-specific conversions with GTM, Conversions API with GTM, deduplication and CAPI signal quality, cited in Sources. 01What do the Insight Tag and Conversions API do?
| Tool | Runs | Powers | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insight Tag | Browser | Website audiences, conversions, demographics of visitors | Blocked by browsers, ad blockers, no consent |
| Conversions API | Server or CRM | Conversions, offline and CRM stages (qualified leads) | Needs setup and data matching |
| Both, deduplicated | Browser + server | Most complete view | Needs a shared event ID |
LinkedIn recommends a redundant setup: browser plus server, deduplicated.
02How do you install the Insight Tag with GTM?
- Get the partner ID: Campaign Manager > Measure > Signals manager > Insight Tag. If no tag exists, review the LinkedIn Ads Agreement and click Agree & create. Choose "I will use a tag manager" and copy the partner ID.
- In GTM: Tags > New > Tag Configuration > Discover more tag types in the Community Template Gallery > search "LinkedIn InsightTag 2.0" > Add to workspace.
- Paste the partner ID.
- Trigger: All Pages, or a consent-based trigger (see below).
- Preview with Tag Assistant (see GTM debugging with Preview and Tag Assistant), then Submit to publish.
- Verify: the tag status shows Unverified until LinkedIn receives traffic; visit your site and check again.
If you use the older Insight Tag template, add 2.0, confirm it works, then pause the old one.
Do not install the tag on pages collecting sensitive data, such as consumer health or personal finance account pages; LinkedIn's terms exclude them.
03How do you track specific conversions?
- Campaign Manager: Measure > Conversion tracking > Create conversion > Website conversion. Name it, set value, attribution and category.
- Sources: choose Tag manager > Event-specific. Copy the conversion ID.
- GTM: add another LinkedIn InsightTag 2.0 tag with the partner ID and conversion ID, fired on the action's trigger (form submit, thank-you page, or a data layer event; see GTM form, click and scroll tracking).
- Review: associate ad sets and publish.
| Conversion | Trigger | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Demo request | Data layer event demo_submitted | Lead or Book appointment |
| Trial sign-up | Thank-you page view | Sign up |
| Content download | Form submit | Download |
| Pricing page view | Page path contains /pricing | Key page view |
04How do you add the Conversions API via GTM?
LinkedIn's Help describes this flow:
- Web container: have a trigger that fires the GA4 event you want as a conversion; note your GA4 measurement ID.
- Server container: the recommended option is to create it during setup through Stape, which creates and hosts a server-side GTM container. LinkedIn says eligible advertisers can host one Stape container per eligible ad account at no extra cost through that flow. Alternatively, set up your own server container with a GA4 client (see GTM server-side tagging) and note its URL.
- Campaign Manager: create a conversion, choose Conversions API, then Google Tag Manager as the source, and connect your Google account.
- Select the GTM account, web container and workspace, and the server-side option.
- Matching: GTM automatically collects email, name, country code, li_fat_id and IP address where available to match events.
- Publish both containers. Data can take hours to appear.
Our view: for qualified leads, also send CRM stages through CAPI with a CRM partner or upload, because those happen offline, after the website event.
05How does deduplication work?
- Create a conversion rule for each source (Insight Tag and CAPI).
- Generate a unique event ID per conversion in the data layer (for example from the form submission ID).
- Send it as the event ID in the Insight Tag and the eventId on the CAPI event.
- LinkedIn discards the CAPI duplicate and counts the Insight Tag event, so the Insight Tag count is usually higher when deduplication works.
- Check Conversion tracking shows both events.
06How should consent work?
In the EEA and UK the Insight Tag generally needs consent. In GTM, fire it only when your consent management platform signals marketing consent (see GTM Consent Mode v2). LinkedIn's tag is not a Google tag, so Google Consent Mode does not control it automatically; use a consent-based trigger or the template's consent settings. For CAPI, make sure your legal basis covers sharing hashed identifiers server-side; ask counsel.
07How do you check signal quality?
Campaign Manager shows CAPI signal quality and match rates. If they are low, LinkedIn Help points to missing identifiers, wrong formats, or delayed events. Send email (hashed by the integration), first-party li_fat_id and timely events.
08Worked example: Ledgerline
Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Competitors A to D and all figures are illustrative.
Ledgerline had a hard-coded old Insight Tag, firing before consent, and no CAPI.
Walkthrough
- Removed hard-coded tag; installed InsightTag 2.0 in GTM gated by marketing consent.
- Conversions: demo request and trial sign-up as event-specific tags on data layer events.
- CAPI: created through the Campaign Manager GTM flow with Stape; lead_id as event ID.
- CRM: SQL stage sent via CAPI for qualified leads.
- Result after 6 weeks (illustrative): reported demo conversions up 27% with deduplication confirmed; qualified leads optimisation enabled.
09Common mistakes
- Firing the Insight Tag before consent in Europe.
- Two Insight Tags (hard-coded and GTM) double-counting.
- CAPI with no event ID, so conversions double-count.
- Tag on sensitive pages.
- Forgetting to publish the server container.
10Try it yourself
Find your partner ID, add the Insight Tag via GTM with a consent trigger, create one event-specific conversion and confirm it moves from Unverified to Active.
11Quick quiz
1. Where do you find the partner ID? Answer: Measure > Signals manager > Insight Tag in Campaign Manager.
2. Which GTM template does LinkedIn recommend? Answer: LinkedIn InsightTag 2.0.
3. Which event does LinkedIn keep when deduplicating? Answer: The Insight Tag event.
4. What does the Stape flow create? Answer: A hosted server-side GTM container.
12What should you check before the next lesson?
- Insight Tag Active, consent-gated.
- At least one event-specific conversion.
- CAPI planned or live with event IDs.
