AI Citation

Definition

Sources engines attach when recommending vendors.

01

Why it matters

An AI citation is a URL or structured source reference an answer engine includes to support part or all of a generated response.

Citations show which proof sources the engine trusted. In B2B, repeated domains include review marketplaces (G2, Capterra), community threads (Reddit), comparison publishers, Wikipedia, and official vendor docs.

02

Metric

citation_share(entity) = citation_count(entity) / sum(citation_count(all tracked entities))

Tracked entities = your brand + competitors in the scan. Neutral URLs may appear as citations without entering this fraction.

03

Not the same as

A mention (brand named in prose). You can be cited without being mentioned, and mentioned without being cited.
