Analysing GA4 Exports with Claude and ChatGPT

Use Claude or ChatGPT to analyse GA4 exports safely: what to export, copyable prompts, checks against GA4 and what never to upload.

Short answer

Export an aggregated GA4 report as CSV, give an AI assistant a precise question and the column definitions, and ask it to show its calculations so you can check two numbers against GA4. This turns a 40-minute monthly analysis into a 10-minute review, as long as you keep the human check.

Key takeaways
  • Export reports or explorations as CSV with clear columns and one date range per file.
  • Tell the assistant what each metric means in GA4 (engaged session, key event).
  • Ask for calculations shown, not just conclusions, and verify two figures.
  • Upload aggregated data only; never user-level exports with IDs.
  • Save the prompt so next month's analysis is comparable.

01What to export

QuestionExport fromColumns
Which channels drive leads?Traffic acquisitionChannel, Sessions, Engaged sessions, Key events (generate_lead)
Which pages do AI visitors land on?Exploration from lesson 9Landing page, Sessions, Key events
What changed month on month? Two Traffic acquisition exportsSame columns, two months

Use Share this report → Download file → CSV in standard reports, or Export data in explorations.

02Copyable prompt

You are a careful marketing analyst. Attached are two GA4 Traffic acquisition
exports (September and October 2026). Columns: Session default channel group,
Sessions, Engaged sessions, Key events (generate_lead only).
Definitions: an engaged session lasted longer than 10 seconds,
had a key event or had 2+ page views.

1. Make a table of each channel's change in sessions and leads, in absolute and % terms.
2. Calculate lead rate (leads / sessions) per channel per month.
3. List the three largest changes and possible reasons, labelled as hypotheses.
4. Show every calculation so I can check it. Do not invent data not in the files.

03Check before you share

  1. Pick two figures from the answer (for example, AI Assistant sessions in October).
  2. Find them in GA4 for the same date range.
  3. If they differ, check the export filter, date range and whether the assistant summed the wrong column.

Our view: AI assistants are good at arithmetic on a clean table and at drafting the narrative. They are not a substitute for knowing how GA4 counts. That is what lessons 1-18 are for.

05Common questions

Can I connect GA4 directly to an AI assistant? Some assistants offer connectors or MCP servers that read analytics data. A CSV export is simpler, works anywhere and is easier to check.

Is it safe to upload GA4 data to an AI assistant? Aggregated GA4 reports usually contain no personal data, but check your company policy and the assistant's data settings before uploading.

Will the AI calculate the same numbers as GA4? Only if you give it the same rows. Always ask it to show calculations and spot-check two figures against GA4.
