Short answer

Your first marketing dashboard should answer one weekly question on one page, with a date control, a handful of scorecards and two or three charts. This lesson walks through creating a reusable data source, building the page, naming everything so teammates can find it, and sharing a view link. We use GA4 as the default example; Sheets works the same way if you do not have GA4 access yet.

Key takeaways
  • Create a reusable data source first, then the report.
  • Page one: date control, 4-6 scorecards, one time series, one table, one breakdown chart.
  • Use owner's credentials before you share.
  • Name reports with brand, audience and cadence: Ledgerline — Weekly marketing (leadership).
  • Share a view link, not edit, until someone needs to change charts.

Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Google Cloud Data Studio documentation, the Data Studio product page, the Looker Studio-is-Data-Studio blog post, connector help pages and the Analytics Help pages cited in Sources. Google renames and moves features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.

01What "done" looks like for page one

ElementPurpose
Title and subtitleWho it is for and what period means
Date range controlDefault last 28 days, comparison previous period optional
ScorecardsSessions, key events, CVR, AI Assistant sessions (if GA4)
Time seriesSessions or key events by day
TableLanding page or campaign with sessions and key events
Pie or barDefault channel group or device
FooterFreshness, credentials owner, "numbers may differ from live UI"

If leadership only ever screenshots page one, that page must stand alone.

02Step-by-step build (GA4)

  1. Data source. Home > Create > Data source > Google Analytics. Pick the GA4 property. Connect. Set credentials to owner's. Leave freshness at 12 hours unless you have a reason. Name it GA4 — Brand Prod (owner).
  2. Report. Create report, add that data source.
  3. Canvas. Set size to a landscape screen size your team actually uses. Add a text title.
  4. Date control. Insert > Date range control. Place top right. Set default to last 28 days.
  5. Scorecards. Insert four scorecards: Sessions, Engaged sessions, Key events, Session key event rate (or your primary conversion metric).
  6. Time series. Dimension Date, metric Sessions. Optionally add Key events as a second metric.
  7. Table. Dimension Landing page + query string (or Session campaign). Metrics Sessions, Key events. Sort by Key events desc. Limit rows to 10.
  8. Bar chart. Dimension Session default channel group, metric Sessions.
  9. Footer text. "GA4 via Data Studio. Owner credentials. Freshness 12 hours. Compared with the GA4 UI, expect small timing differences."
  10. Share. Share > restrict to your domain or named users > Viewer.

Detailed GA4 field choices and quota hygiene continue in lesson 9 and the existing GA4 Looker Studio reporting page.

03Sheets alternative (15 minutes)

If GA4 access is blocked today:

  1. Put Date, Channel, Sessions, Leads in a Sheet.
  2. Connect Sheets, owner's credentials, freshness 15 minutes or 1 hour.
  3. Build the same layout.
  4. Replace Sheets with GA4 later without redesigning the page.

04Naming and versioning

Bad nameBetter name
Untitled ReportLedgerline — Weekly marketing (leadership)
GA4 copy 3GA4 — Ledgerline Prod (owner)
Client dashboard final FINALAcme Co — Monthly retainers (client view)

Copy a report when you experiment. Never experiment on the link leadership already bookmarked.

05Share settings that avoid pain

  • Viewers by default.
  • Editors only for people who change charts.
  • Avoid "anyone with the link" for anything with customer or revenue detail unless legal signed off.
  • If you embed in Notion or an intranet, watch GA4 quota (lesson 17).

06Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.

ItemValue (illustrative)
Build time50 minutes
Charts on page 19
Default rangeLast 28 days
Primary key eventgenerate_lead
Share listMarketing team + CEO (viewer)

Walkthrough

  1. Ops created the reusable GA4 source before the report.
  2. Page one answered "are we getting leads, and from which channels?"
  3. They refused to add a second page on day one.
  4. CEO opened the view link on Monday; one chart was slow. They removed two vanity scorecards.
  5. The same report became the parent for Ads and AI pages in later lessons.

07Exact first-build checklist (print this)

  1. Create folder in Drive or Team Drive for Data Studio — Brand.
  2. Create reusable GA4 data source named GA4 — Brand Prod (owner).
  3. Set owner's credentials; freshness 12 hours.
  4. Blank report → rename Brand — Marketing Overview v1.
  5. Add date control default last 28 days.
  6. Four scorecards: Sessions, Engaged sessions, Key events, Engagement rate.
  7. Time series: Sessions + Key events.
  8. Table: Session default channel group.
  9. Footer text with freshness + owner email.
  10. Share view to marketing group; keep edit for ops only.
  11. Open token usage once on a cold load.
  12. Copy to MASTER only after a week of stability.

08Scorecard formatting tips

  • Use compact numbers for large session counts.
  • Show comparison to previous period only if stakeholders already understand it.
  • Conditional formatting on engagement rate can wait until targets exist in Sheets.
  • Do not put seven decimal places on rates.

09How this pairs with Academy tracks

After the first dashboard loads cleanly, layer:

Jumping straight to a 12-page blend is how first projects stall.

10First-week QA script

DayCheck
Day 0Sessions within ~10% of GA4 UI last 7 days
Day 1Key events match GA4 for a known campaign landing page
Day 2Channel table totals reconcile to scorecard sessions
Day 3A viewer account can open without auth prompts
Day 4Token usage reviewed once
Day 5Footer freshness still accurate

If Day 0 fails, stop decorating charts and fix the data source selection (property ID, credentials).

11Common mistakes

  • Starting from a public template and never checking field names.
  • Twenty charts on page one and a quota error by 09:10.
  • Sharing edit access to the whole company.
  • No date control, so every screenshot is a different range.
  • Untitled Report living in someone's Drive forever.

12Try it yourself

Build a one-page report from GA4 or Sheets with a date control, four scorecards, one time series and one table. Share it to yourself as viewer in an incognito window and confirm it loads.

13Quick quiz

1. Why create the data source from the home page?

Answer: So it is reusable across reports instead of trapped as an embedded one-off.

2. What credentials mode should a shared marketing dashboard use?

Answer: Owner's credentials.

3. Roughly how many charts belong on page one?

Answer: About 6 to 10 for speed and quota.

14What should you check before the next lesson?

  • One shared one-page report exists.
  • Footer states freshness and owner.
  • You can open it as a viewer.

15Common questions

How long should a first marketing dashboard take? Most marketers can ship a one-page GA4 or Sheets dashboard in under an hour if the data source already exists. Plan a morning if you are connecting GA4 for the first time.

How many charts should page one have? Aim for 6 to 10. More charts mean more queries, slower loads and higher GA4 token use.

Should I start from a template? Templates are fine for layout ideas. Rebuild field names against your own data source so you do not inherit someone else's broken metrics.
