Short answer

Connectors are how Data Studio reaches your data. Google ships free native connectors for GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, Sheets, BigQuery and other Google products. The gallery also lists well over a thousand partner (community) connectors for Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, CRMs and more. Partner connectors usually cost money. This lesson helps you pick the minimum connector set for a marketing stack, understand what is free versus paid, and avoid paying twice for the same GA4 pipe.

Key takeaways
  • Start with Google native connectors for GA4, Ads, Search Console, Sheets and BigQuery.
  • Use a partner connector for non-Google ad platforms or when native GA4 quotas keep failing.
  • Partner pricing is vendor-specific (often from roughly $15–$40 per source per month on entry plans — confirm live prices).
  • Prefer one reusable data source per platform on owner's credentials.
  • BigQuery is free as a connector; you still pay BigQuery storage and query bytes.

Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Google Cloud Data Studio documentation, the Data Studio product page, the Looker Studio-is-Data-Studio blog post, connector help pages and the Analytics Help pages cited in Sources. Google renames and moves features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.

01What Google gives you for free

ConnectorTypical marketing useLimits to remember
Google AnalyticsTraffic, channels, key events, landing pagesGA4 Data API quotas; thresholds and sampling in the property
Google AdsSpend, clicks, conversions, campaign reportingMCC: up to 50 sub-accounts per data source; freshness fixed at 12 hours
Search ConsoleQueries, pages, countries, devicesSite vs URL impression tables are separate data sources; 12-hour freshness
Google SheetsGoals, offline CRM exports, prompt-tracking, budgetsGood for small controlled tables; not a warehouse
BigQueryUnsampled GA4 export, modelled martsQuery cost; needs SQL or modelled tables
YouTube AnalyticsChannel performanceOne channel per source in typical setups
Extract DataSnapshot of another sourceDodges live quotas; not real time

Google's product page says Data Studio connects to more than 1,400 data sources. That total includes partner connectors. The Google-built ones above are the ones most marketing teams should master first.

02How to connect a Google source (pattern)

  1. In Data Studio, create a data source (from the home page for reusable sources).
  2. Pick the connector.
  3. Authorise with a Google account that can see the property or account.
  4. Select the property, customer or site.
  5. For Search Console, choose Site Impression or URL Impression, plus a default search type.
  6. For Google Ads, prefer Overall Account Fields when you need mixed dimensions.
  7. Click Connect, set field types, set credentials to owner's, set freshness, then add the source to a report.

Detailed builds sit in lessons 9-11. The Search Console connector docs are clear that one data source can only use one impression table, so you often need two sources side by side.

03When partner connectors earn their keep

Partner connectors help when:

  • You must show Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest or similar next to Google Ads.
  • Native GA4 reports keep hitting quota errors for many viewers.
  • You want the vendor to normalise currencies, account names and schemas across clients.
  • You need history retained in their pipeline, not only in the platform UI.

Common vendor names marketers meet include Supermetrics, Funnel, Windsor.ai, Porter Metrics and others. MentionX does not endorse one. Compare: sources covered, Looker Studio / Data Studio support, whether data can also land in BigQuery or Sheets, trial length, and whether price is per connector, per account or per workspace.

Our view: if your only non-Google need is a monthly Meta spend number, a Sheets tab updated by n8n or a manual export can beat a full partner stack for a year.

04Cost model that finance will accept

Cost typeWho bills itHow to forecast
Data Studio productFree, or Pro seatsLesson 2
Google native connectors$0 connector feen/a
BigQueryGoogle CloudBytes scanned + storage; start on free tier if eligible
Partner connectorsVendorPrice page × sources × workspaces
Staff timeYouBroken blends and quota firefights cost more than seats

Never tell finance "Looker Studio is free" if you silently added three partner connectors and a BigQuery project.

05Credentials and reuse

Create reusable data sources named like GA4 — Brand Prod (owner) and share them into every report that needs GA4. Duplicate embedded sources are how teams burn quota and disagree on field definitions. Pair this with the GA4 Looker Studio reporting lesson already in Academy.

06Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.

SourceConnector choiceMonthly connector cost (illustrative)
GA4Native Google Analytics$0
Google AdsNative$0
Search ConsoleNative (Site + URL sources)$0
Prompt trackingSheets$0
Meta Ads (test)Partner trial, then Sheets via n8n$0 during trial

Walkthrough

  1. Ops built four reusable Google sources and one Sheets source for AI prompt results.
  2. They refused a partner GA4 connector "because it is nicer" while native still worked.
  3. Meta started as a partner trial. After six weeks they only needed monthly spend, so n8n wrote Meta spend into Sheets (n8n reporting).
  4. The report footer listed every connector and whether it was native or partner.
  5. Finance approved the stack because the only recurring product cost was optional Pro later.

07Which Google connectors should marketers prioritise?

PriorityConnectorWhy first
1Google Analytics (GA4)Traffic, AI Assistant, key events
2Google AdsSpend and paid efficiency
3Search ConsoleQuery and Generative AI exports
4Google SheetsTargets, prompt scans, GenAI stubs
5BigQueryScale and Conversational Analytics agents

Partner connectors (Supermetrics, Funnel, Coefficient and others) help when you need Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok or CRM in one board. Budget for partner seats separately from Data Studio Pro. Always keep a Google-connector north-star chart so a partner outage does not blank the exec page.

08Owner vs viewer credentials (detail)

ModeWho authorises API callsCache behaviourUse when
Owner's credentialsThe data source ownerViewers share the owner's fetched cacheCompany-wide and client view links
Viewer's credentialsEach viewerEach viewer can trigger separate fetchesRare; tightly controlled exploration

For GA4, viewer credentials are a common quota foot-gun on shared links. Prefer owner credentials and document the owner in the connector register (governance lesson).

09Freshness cheat sheet

ConnectorFreshness in Data Studio (per Google docs)
Google AdsEvery 12 hours (fixed)
Search ConsoleEvery 12 hours (fixed)
GA4Configurable options including 1 / 4 / 12 hours (confirm in UI)
Google SheetsAs short as about 15 minutes depending on settings
BigQueryDepends on how you configure; often match batch jobs

Put the expected lag in the report footer. Stakeholders comparing a noon Ads UI screenshot to Data Studio will otherwise file fake bugs.

10Common mistakes

  • Paying for a partner GA4 connector before trying owner's credentials, fewer charts and extracts.
  • One Search Console source expecting both Site and URL impression grains.
  • Connecting a personal Gmail to client Ads, then losing access when the person leaves.
  • Forgetting BigQuery query cost after calling the connector free.
  • Five partner tools overlapping the same Meta account across teams.

11Try it yourself

List every platform in your weekly marketing report. Mark each as Google-native, Sheets or partner. Price the partner column from the vendor site today and paste the date beside the number.

12Quick quiz

1. Does the Google Ads connector cost a connector fee?

Answer: No. It is a Google-built connector. Pro seats and Ads spend are separate topics.

2. Why might you create two Search Console data sources?

Answer: Site Impression and URL Impression are different tables; one data source can use only one.

3. Name one reason to buy a partner connector.

Answer: Non-Google ad platforms, quota relief, multi-source normalisation, or retained history in the vendor pipeline.

13What should you check before the next lesson?

  • Inventory of sources and connector types.
  • At least one reusable GA4 or Sheets data source on owner's credentials.
  • Partner costs dated if any.
